Adult Workshops

September 2021

All adult workshops are still on hold until further notice. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Gearin’ Up Bicycles hosts events at its bicycle shop throughout the year to engage with supporters and make cycling more accessible for DC residents. No previous experience is required. Gearin’ Up strives to accommodate different skill levels in each class. All event proceeds support youth enrolled in Gearin’ Up programs.

WTN (Women, Trans, and Nonbinary) Night

FREE, every 2nd and 4th Wednesday, 6 – 8 pm, Donations appreciated!

This class welcomes women, trans, and non-binary individuals who want to grow their basic bicycle mechanics and maintenance skills. Acknowledging the barriers found in the bicycle industry, the classes are led by women and non-binary volunteers to provide a unique, safe space for participants to ask questions and practice skills either on their bicycles or those provided by Gearin’ Up. Class format is identical to the Basic Mechanics & Maintenance Class, with topics varying each week. WTN Nights also provide an opportunity to meet like-minded cyclists while improving basic bicycle mechanic skills.

Basic Mechanics Class

FREE, every 1st and 3rd Wednesday, 6 – 8 PM, Donations appreciated!

Introducing a series of Basic Mechanics classes for the 2020 season, Gearin’ Up Bicycles aims to teach adults how to maintain their bicycles and fix common mechanical issues. Classes will be led by Keith Jackson, our seasoned general manager with more than 20 years of experience working in the bike industry and commuting via D.C. streets. From repairing race bicycles during Ironman bike events to working at local farmers market pop up repair shops, Keith can answer just about any question regarding your two wheel friend. For specifics on what will be taught at upcoming classes, please email with questions!

Friday Open Shop Night

$25, every Friday, 6 – 8 pm

Know what you’re doing but don’t want to grease up your apartment? Fridays are “open swim” nights when the shop floor is open to everyone, not just those building bicycles through Build Your Own Bike or our youth programs. You can access all of our tools, including a headset press, truing stands, frame prep equipment, and more. Standard used parts are included in the class fee; as with other classes, you can also buy new or premium parts. Plus, you can chat all things bicycle related with Gearin’ Up staff.
