Traditional bike shops are wonderful things, but as profit-focused businesses that often cater to competitive cyclists, they often are not the best fit for traditionally underserved communities. Our Pop Up Shops are temporary, outdoor, free or low-cost bike shops, staffed by our youth mechanics. These one-day shops are focused on getting bikes in the community safe and ridable and teaching people how to keep their bikes rolling.
Pop Up Shops are generally arranged through a partner organization or through input from community members. Shops happen year round (as weather permits), most often on weekends. Starting in 2016, Gearin’ Up will have two “permanent pop up” shops, all year long, at Union Market in NoMa and Saint Elizabeths Hospital in SE DC.
